In 2012, the new Toyota 86 and its sister car Subaru BRZ, named after the model of the famous car, debuted. Its features include Subaru's horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine, which was jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, and in pursuit of the fun of driving, it adopts a FR layout like the AE86 type. When the model was changed in 2021, it became an exclusive vehicle of the GR (GAZOO Racing) brand, Toyota's motorsports/high-performance commercial vehicle division, from the Toyota 86, and the name was changed to GR86. In addition to parts that meet the demands of the times, such as strengthening the body rigidity and improving safety performance, the model was changed to the FA24 type, which has an engine displacement increased by about 400cc to improve response and flexibility in order to achieve a more pleasant driving experience. In designing this makeover of the GR86 RZ, we extracted all reproducible details based on the 3D CAD data of the actual car provided by Toyota Motor Corporation, and then designed the prototype data. Regarding the body design, we aimed for an objective design that avoided intentional deformations that would change the shape based on the prototype designer's subjective opinion. Although it is a proportion model, even the fine details of the underside of the chassis are faithfully traced from the actual car. An evolved horizontally opposed NA engine with increased displacement The FA24 is the successor to the FA20. This engine has a naturally aspirated design (FA20 model: 86.0mm x 86.0mm, compression ratio 12.5) and is now 94.0mm x 86.0mm, compression ratio 12.5 for the FA24 model, which is a short-stroke engine with an emphasis on high revolution response. Jointly developed by Subaru and Toyota for use in the fun-to-drive mid-class sports cars "BRZ" and "GR86," this 4-cylinder engine has an increased displacement from the previous model's 2.0 liters to 2.4 liters, and is a collaborative unit between Subaru (and Toyota) that combines Toyota's gasoline direct injection engine technology "D-4S" to create the ultimate horizontally opposed naturally aspirated engine.
